In 1972-74, there general feeling around campus was that the profs and Strotz
thought that football was not condusive to good academics and that if they could
they'd just have it go away.

The Big 10 was so worried about NU dropping Div I football, they allowed State
Penn to join.

But cooler heads prevailed and NU realized how much money you can raise with a
decent football team. Alums like somewhere outside to visit several times a year
and are willing to pay for it.
