[NU Sports] I hate Hawaii

That spanned a lot of my time in Evanston too.

I remember thinking when they brought Denny Green in from Stanford, here's
another interesting PR ploy. I was happy we had hired an African American
coach, but I was wondering why we and he would want to come into such a
hopeless situation. We were so programmed to believe that the whole
football system was stacked against a school that refused to weaken
admission standards, that even the thought that we could have a winning
football team seemed comical.

Regardless of how you feel now about GB, every coach and fan at NU now owes
him a little bit of gratitude for opening our eyes to what was possible.

I think the general concensus was that Strotz was from the Uof C
philoshoshy of -de-emphasizing collegiate atheletics and therefore was fine
having a team that was getting killed week after week where every first down
was cause for a Rose Bowl cheer.

Having a 1-31 record under Venturi and a two 1-10 seasons for Pont's last
2 years as head coach didn't seem to shake up much. I suspect that when the
athletes, particularly the African -American ones complained about Venturi,
combined with our horrific record, that there was a realization that we had
to have a new program top to bottom. (Pont, who was then just AD at that
time, had similar accusations leveled at him when he was Coach at Indiana )

Getting Single as AD and Green as head coach , both from Stanford, showed
that we finally were going to attempt to address some major problems--
