I do it all the time.... you might call our defense a triumvirate - I came up
with the scheme, but my two assistants execute the LB and d-back play. Our Line
coach just fires them up.
Unless Bates was offered the DC job, he'd probably leave with Colby, IMHO

But a head coach signaling defensive plays? Actually, I have since had another
source confirm that Fitz is more actively involved in the defensive calls (even
if Colby still does most of them). Whatever you may wish to call it, Colby is
gone after the season. "Hired away" to a I-AA school or something. Guaranteed.
And, Bates probably promoted.
