[NU Sports] Sad Day (was Re: Roosevelt)

When I read Bob's post this morning, I didn't want to
respond right away and take a cheap shot ... but the
tone really bothered and disappointed me.
It just struck me as a sad day that our little list
had come to this. Bob's post wasn't just people
arguing about whether Randy Walker's the right coach
or if Carmody should be fired ... it went beyond NU
sports and got personal. It was a cheap, uncalled for
attack of another person's character.
And what's truly sad is that Bob states this in his
first paragraph ...
> adult conservative. This
> also should put a well deserved end to any more
> political discussion on this
> List because Mike Nolan surely won't permit this
> discussion to continue once
... so he knew it was wrong and did it anyway. It
wasn't impulsive, heat-of-the-moment ... this was a
personal attack.
I have no idea what happened between you two and
frankly do not care - but airing anyone's dirty
laundry here is not only uncalled for, it is
unacceptable - and it shouldn't take another
undeserved headache for Mike Nolan and a warning
message to let anyone on this list know that.
This went beyond baiting, flaming, being too negative
(or in my case, overly-rose-colored-glasses :) ) or
repetitively posting messages of doom and gloom. Yeah,
we've had arguments on the list before and I've been
in my share of threads where people disagreed ... but
even if it got less-than-civil it never resorted to
this type of personal attack dredging up stories from
the past to assault one's integrity.
How a political thread, ill-advised as it may have
been, degenerated into some forty-year-old personal
vendetta is not saying a lot about our beloved
university or the subscribers to this list.
> So Jim, do you still find this discussion of
> politics "fun"?
I had not paid much attention to it, but yes, it
seemed to be a fun little off-season trek into some
standard Bush/Clinton bashing with a thin NU tie to
flip-flops ... not really award-winning prose, but not
the out-shouting political punditry of today's 24-hour
news networks either.
But then your post went into cheap-shot territory. And
what really is disappointing, Bob, is that you knew
exactly what you were doing and still spewed venom
from four decades ago that had nothing to do with the
topic, the list or anyone outside of the five of you
who lived in that house.
It shouldn't take a note from Mike - it should be
obvious to all of us and I would have hoped we knew
better.
Can we PLEASE talk about something to do with the
words Northwestern or Sports?
