Speaking of things getting blown out of proportion, take a look at this flip-flop thread.

First, I don't think the original poster was saying that the team should wear flip flops as a sign of disrespect.  I think he was saying that he hopes we win another national championship.  And if the team wants to wear flip flops, so be it.

Second, I don't think the team was in bad taste when they wore "flip flops."  The "flip flop" is currently a fashionable women's shoe choice in the summer time.  Indeed, many of the other women's teams who were present at the White House last year were also wearing flip flops, and most of them were otherwise not as well dressed as our lacrosse team (i.e., others were wearing shorts and sports apparel, while our team was dressed up for the ocassion).  I posted something on this at the time with links to pictures of other women's teams in attendance, but I don't have access to my archive at the moment, so you'll have to take my word on it.
