The question I keep asking myself is: Why do the freshmen agree to do
this?
A fraternity or sorority can threaten a pledge with non-initiation if they
do not
take part in a hazing ritual, but these women have already made the team
and been awarded their scholarships. What would be the penalty for
refusing
to be humiliated? Your teammates won't pass you the ball in a match?
What coach would permit that?
The athletes must somehow believe that the coaching staff gives these
"initiations" their tacit approval, and unless the coaches make it clear
that
this is not the case, they must be held responsible.

What about the students themselves?
I'm not saying that NU isn't responsible for providing as much
oversight as possible, and it's important to make sure there isn't an
overall lack of control. But ultimately, it's up to individuals
directly involved to make good or bad decisions.
