"That hack [NU president Henry Bienen] spends way too much time worrying
about the academic mission of the school and not nearly enough worrying
about its athletic programs. . ."
A college president who concentrates on academics? Lord Almighty and
Land-O-Goshen, that feller's been sippin' drink from the wrong still!
String him up! On second thought, hanging's too good for the varlit! Boil
tar, pluck a right goodly number of chickens, and cut us off a good sized
rail. We'uns is a gonna run that Yankee scoundrel back up north quicker 'n
a hungry ol' hound dog trees a coon! (I guess that means Bienen will end up
in Lake Forest.)
But seriously, folks, a college president who concentrates on academics can
hardly be call a "hack" on that alone, if at all. You got some other
evidence? Do I want consistent winners in football and basketball at
Northwestern? Yup, sure do. Do I think it's possible? Yep, however
unrealistic that may be. It is possible that to have consistent winners in
those two sports will require that academic standards be lowered at least a
little. Don't know if I want that to happen. For certain President Bienen
doesn't, and that is not a bad thing.
