No, this is not unusual, though neither is it commonplace for a school like
Northwestern.  Usually it means the player has some familiarity with the 
institution, which is why you are a bit more prone to see it with the big
name football programs.  

However, having followed more than a few recruits, a few of whom I knew
before they started getting recruited, there are often factors leading 
to the decision than even the recruit himself is not overtly aware of.
