According to his bio, there was no time for playing

BS Ohio State 83
MEd Miami(O) 85

Muskingum 82-83
Miami(O) 83-84
St Joseph 84-88
Navy 88-92
New Hampshire 92-97
Kent State 97-00
Louisiana Tech 00-06

It also said he took over as DC last year after Spring Drills were complete.

He improved their Total Defense from 84th to 68th in Division 1, 381.3 yards per game. We were at 119th last year, 482.9 ypg

He improved Scoring Defense from 92nd to 60th, 25.5 points per game. We were at 32.5 ppg in 105th

He improved Rushing Defense from 78th to 39th, 1465 rushing yards. We were 111th, 2307 yards

So he has been able to improve the defense that he inherited

Obviously, the WAC is not the Big 10, but they are an offensively-oriented conference, and Louisiana Tech does play a strong group of non-conference games.

Chuck Herron Tech '85

His LA Tech bio says he graduated from OSU with a degree in Physical Education
bus says nothing about his playing days....

He also has a very similar background as Eric Washington, both coached at Navy
and are retired Navy Lt's.

In any case, he appears to be a 10 year older version of Fitz - success
everywhere he's been, and that's a good thing.

Did Bates play for OSU?

Since Randy Bates was Colby's LB assistant at Kent State, I'd expect an

improvement in the defense, but then I would expect that improvement if there

hadn't been a coaching change.

In any case, the LA Tech folks talked about the Colby-Bates link in their first

stories and Bates' options should Colby go somewhere else after this year would

include being DC OR going with Colby.

Speed will be the key to our defense this year, and I think we just might have

the quickness and experience up front to get it done.

We took LSU's defensive coordinator for a linebacker coach?

Now, that's a

coup. Does anyone smell a new DC for NU next season whose

name will not be

Brown?
