What does Venturi's age have to do with Fitzgerald? If you have it in you
to be a great Head Coach, age is not the only--or the deciding factor--see,
e.g., John Gruden in the NFL and Bucky Harris in 1948 (if I am correct) in the
American League in baseball. Fitz is articulate, passionate and charismatic,
and clearly knowledgeable about defense and recruiting. He was a "thinking
man's player" when the Purple went to Pasadena (and the next year to
Orlando). Anyone who heard him speak at the Pep Rally in Newport Beach--broken leg
and all--knows how well he can lift a crowd. I have no problem with either
going with him now or setting up a longterm plan with Vanderlinden and then
Fitz. But to rule him out because Rick Venturi failed--in another era--before
GB got people to believe NU could win football games and before RW showed that
our program could sustain competence and place well year after year in our
tough league--is just irrational, IMHO.

Happy 4th to all.
