[NU Sports] Respect

I would like that as well.  But, I think it is fantasy to believe the
administration (Murphy, Bienen, Board of Trustees) hasn't been quietly
working, discussing, and meeting behind the scenes since last Friday morning
to decide and act on filling the void.
I don't believe anything will be announced this week, but that won't mean
decisions will not have been made.  If we don't start discussing now who
will fill the void, we may instead end-up discussing only who has filled the
void.

My top three choices for a replacement are:
1) Vanderlinden - After he left the defensive coordinator position at NU to
take the head-coaching job at Maryland in 1997, Barnett's teams went
straight downhill.  NU's defense has been horrific ever since.  That shows
the impact he had on getting us to the Rose Bowl.  
2) Vanderlinden - Maryland gave him a 5-year contract to do the job.
Maryland fired him after 4 years.  In year 5, with Vanderlinden's players,
Maryland went 10-2.  It has been downhill since then for Maryland.
Vanderlinden has been linebacker coach for Joe Pa' since then.  During that
time, the defense - and linebackers, in particular - at PSU have greatly
improved.
3) Vanderlinden - I think it was Coach Roy that wrote on list last year that
Vanderlinden had problems with Alumni communications at Maryland and some
issues with players not attending classes.  However, Vanderlinden knows the
environment in which he is coaching, knows how to play by the rules in that
environment, knows Northwestern, and knows what it takes to run a successful
program at Northwestern.

Come on people, out of respect for the Walker Family and
all the players and their parents that read this list, can we just talk
about Coach Walker for the week and quiet the specualation of the next coach
until after the funeral.
