As a New Yorker, I have to admit that Ms. Haskins makes a great case for
"The Windy City"". In New York much of the outright opposition and lack of
enthusiasm for the Olympic bid last year was the unfortunate reliance on the
silly idea to have an 80,000 seat football/Olympic stadium plopped into Manhattan
southwest of Times Square along the Hudson River. There would simply be no
way for people to get there other than on mass transit--and, as NU fans well
know, gridiron fans like to tailgate. I think the vision she paints of an
Olympics taking advantage of Chicago's natural geography, its ethnic and
cultural and diversity, its "can-do" spirit and historical ability to build and
re-build, and its love of sports makes a compelling case. As someone who
entered NU in September, 1970 as a provincial Long Islander, and left in 1974 as
someone who really loves Chicago and appreciates its unique qualities, I hope
it is the U.S. representative. I actually have a law partner who does legal
work for the Olympic Committee, so if the Olympics had been in NYC, I was
golden for tickets, but still think Chicago would make a more logical host.
