My youngest just went through that process and I can report that ease of
online applications vary widely (as you might expect). The majority of the
schools he applied to still charged a fee for the online application (though
it was small).
There is still a lot of paperwork, even if you do submit electronically.
His HS, for example, doesn't submit transcripts or recommendations
electronically. University of Colorado Boulder, for example, accepts the
application online but doesn't accept payment for the application
electronically (go figure). So I think that a lot of schools are still
figuring this out.
There also appear to be more essays than when my older son went through the
process five years ago.
>From what I've read, part of that is an attempt by at least the top tier
public schools to meet their goals of having a diverse student population
without running afoul of the right wing backlash against affirmative
action.

The rankings will only rise if other schools are not also seeing big
increases in the number of applicants, since I assume those rankings are
relative.
I understand that all of the top schools are seeing big increases in the
number of applicants, in part because students are applying to more schools
than they used to.
According to a November 30th article in the Wall Street Journal, in 2004
16.1% of incoming freshmen applied to seven or more schools, up from 9.6% in
1994. The ease of online applications is one factor in the increase.
(Some schools even waive the application fee for online applications, though
I believe Northwestern is not among them, as I recall it wasn't when my son
applied a few years ago.)
Correct me if I'm wrong, is not the 'yield' (the percentage of accepted
students who actually enroll) going down at Northwestern and other schools?
