The rankings will only rise if other schools are not also seeing big
increases in the number of applicants, since I assume those rankings 
are relative.

I understand that all of the top schools are seeing big increases in
the number of applicants, in part because students are applying to more
schools than they used to.

According to a November 30th article in the Wall Street Journal, in 2004
16.1% of incoming freshmen applied to seven or more schools, up from 9.6%
in 1994.  The ease of online applications is one factor in the increase.
(Some schools even waive the application fee for online applications, 
though I believe Northwestern is not among them, as I recall it wasn't
when my son applied a few years ago.)

Correct me if I'm wrong, is not the 'yield' (the percentage of accepted
students who actually enroll) going down at Northwestern and other schools?
