[NU Sports] What's the matter with Stanford basketball?

I agree - Scout's "The Bootleg" was one of the first true internet fan sites and
had a gazillion paying members very early on. They're still one of the largest
here on Scout, and I think it shows the level of support that Stanford has among
its alums, many of whom are in the computer biz.
In any case, they seem to be able to draw smart athletes into their programs,
and then win at the "non revenue" sports.
It fosters a climate of success that carries over into business.
It's a shame NU tried to follow the U of Chicago model back in the 70's and
diminish the importance of athletics to the University. We have 20 years of
"lost" alumni out there who don't remember the athletic teams fondly.
Those that do still tell stories about watching NU lose at home. We were proud
of our NFL guys, but NU was always about 15 players short in football, and 4 in
basketball.
Stanford took the other road [along with Duke] and started trading their
athletic prowess for contributions - it seems to have worked in both places,
altho Duke is still a ways behind in football.
The present regime in the AD's office seems to understand the importance of
sports to the overall presence of a university in its community. We still have a
long way to go, but we have come a long way from the mid 70's when we couldn't
win if the future of the world depended on that win.
