Talking to UTEP fans at the game the Sun Bowl is NOT part of campus. I asked this because I was shocked by the beer sales. So any church-state conflict did not happen in regards to Diamond Rio.
El Paso was great. Everybody was very friendly and I loved the local excitement for the game. Reading the El Paso Times sports section was like reading the papers in Madison and Iowa City -- a rah, rah over-the-top coverage of the game. The Trib and Sun-Times devote more space to Blackhawks coverage -- ugh!
Our special teams were abysmal, other than our kick coverage, which was excellent.
I figure 23 points lost:
Missed FG - 3
Blocked FG - 3
Extra Points - 2
On-sides returned for TDs - 14
UCLA going for 2 instead of 1 - 1
Our defense other than stopping the run late was excellent. They shutdown one of the best and most efficient QBs in the nation. That being said McGarigle did not have a good game even though he was supposedly healthier than anytime throughout the season. Also Heinz was out-of-control. Our personal fouls this season were way, way down and he had 2 unnecessary ones.
Our OL was sub-par.
Bas was inconsistent, but that might have been due to pressure or cheap shots.
Our WRs dropped too many passes. TJ Jones should not start again until he can catch passes. Ross Lane should have started the game instead of TJ.
Resolutions/To Do for 2006:
* Get a special teams coordinator
* Stop the run
* Develop Bacher slowly by running the ball
* Give RW an extension if he accomplishes the first item
