Jonathan's points are all well taken.
Another reason why 15 minutes is wholly insufficient and inappropriate for
halftime: It cuts down on the time that fans have to use rest rooms, buy food
and beverages, etc. The trend towards favoring TV over fans in the seats is
getting really ugly--especially in the NFL, with late-season night games in
the always-balmy Northeast and Midwest, 4 p.m. E.S.T. starts on Sundays for
far too many games that should otherwise be played at 1 p.m. (or 12 p.m. in
C.S.T.), long commercial breaks, etc. And, of course, my favorite sport,
baseball, has built a strong future fan base with those wonderful World Series
night games that stretch into next week. Not to mention our very own NCAA with
its night games on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays--which fits
nicely into academic schedules and provides more than ample recovery time for
the athletes between games. Yes, the "idiot box" rules the Sports Kingdom,
and if anyone doubts this premise, just tune in NBC's coverage of the
Olympics. You just might see some competition amidst all of the commercial clutter.
