As an EE major, I took several courses from Prof. Butz when I was at NU.  
He was not known for having those views at the time, I don't think they
surfaced until after he was awarded tenure.

I'm not sure they would have been a factor in his tenure decision under
AAUP tenure guidelines anyway.  Tenure is supposed to be based on someone's 
research, publishing and teaching skills.  (I wasn't impressed with him 
as a teacher, but I wasn't the most dedicated of students and numerical 
analysis wasn't exactly an exciting subject, either.)
