I didn't notice that they were broadcasting a show on the 2006 tournament
too, but two nights ago I stumbled upon the 2005 tournament on CSTV. I had
never seen a college debate tournament before, but knowing of NU's
dominance, I watched and got hooked into watching until the end. I saw in
the schedule that it was being rebroadcast, so I taped the next showing so I
could catch the beginning, which I missed the first time. You're right--a
few things really did surprise me:
1. The extremely casual (some might say slovenly) dress for most
participants, including the top teams.
2. The incredible rate of speech and the completely unnatural delivery
style and gasps for air common to just about everyone.
3. The liberal use of profanity _during_ the debates.
4. The interesting approaches taken by some schools, like Western Georgia,
Louisville, and a couple of the California state universities (other than
Berkeley).
The show (at least, the 2005 version) is documentary-style. I found it
completely fascinating. Not quite the same level of excitement as with the
lacrosse tournament last year, but still pretty good. It was also really
fun to hear the narrator and the other coaches--like Harvard's--gushing
about how great and dynastic Northwestern is. :)

The 2006 National Debate Tournament was hosted by NU in March. A
one-hour highlight show is now being aired on CSTV (Channel 610 on
DirecTV). Although we didn't win it this year, I think a lot of you
might enjoy watching it because there are a number of NU campus scenes
throughout the presentation. It will be shown tonight at 7 pm EST and
10:30 pm EST, and again Saturday morning at 8:30 am EST. And, if you've
never watched debate, you'll probably be surprised. -- Jim B.
