The funny thing about that is that IF the Big Ten did
have a title game, they would likely rig the divisions
(ala the ACC) so that Michigan and OSU were in
separate divisions ... so you'd have probably gotten a
rematch in the Big Ten title game and possibly a team
that had "already had their chance" winning the
rematch.
But again, some good comments all around and I think
Michael made an excellent point about Michigan being
"out of sight, out of mind" by finishing so early.
I'm not knocking Florida at all. They won what I've
always believed is the nation's strongest conference
and are a deserving title game foe. It's interesting
that the top five in the final coach's poll are 3 Big
Ten teams and 2 SEC teams. So we'll have the champs of
the top two leagues this year facing off.
I'm just knocking the way Michigan was jobbed out of
the title game through extensive lobbying. Interesting
how Lloyd Carr seemed to try and take the high road
with all the discussion and it may have cost him. Had
he have been more vocal these last two weeks ala Urban
Meyer or Mack Brown a couple years ago when Texas
leapfrogged Cal, it may have been a different story.
So anyway, I know I've blabbed more than enough on the
topic and I'll shut up.:) I just love talking college
football and responding to some good posts and
thoughts from elsewhere. I can certainly see the case
for Florida and it should be an entertaining BCS
lineup for a change. I just didn't agree with the
method.
As for the other Big Ten bowl matchups ...
* WISCONSIN vs. Arkansas should be a heck of a game.
Probably the two most physically pounding ground games
in those two tough leagues. This one will be brutal in
the trenches - a day for the big uglies!
* PENN STATE vs. Tennessee might be a chance for the
Big Ten to pick up an upset. JoePa's one of the best
with weeks to prepare and Tennessee finished the year
limping to the finish. If the PSU offense can just
hang on to the ball and not hurt their solid D, maybe.
* IOWA vs. Texas has all the makings of a rout. Texas
is this/close to being a BCS team and really got the
shaft in the bowl shuffle this year. Add in an Iowa
team that shouldn't be here, backed into a bowl and is
playing a short drive from Austin and ... ouch!
* PURDUE vs. Maryland could be one of the more
entertaining minor bowls. The Boilers showed at Hawaii
that they can score (they just can't kick) and
Maryland has had some big-play ability this year as
well.
* MINNESOTA vs. Texas Tech should be an interesting
clash of styles in the desert. The pass-happy Raiders
vs. the ground-it-up Gophers. Expect lots of points.
I think we start 0-3 but win the four in January.
Go Gophers! Go Boilers! Go Hawkeyes! Go Lions!
Go Badgers! Go Wolverines! Go Buckeyes! GO BIG TEN!
But most of all ...
GO CATS!!!
