Don't we get approximately the same revenue from the NCAA tournament whether we make it or not ? Or does the conference split things differently in basketball ?

The arena obviously needs some improvements, so hopefully this renovation
will be a move in the right direction. Other improvements that would
benefit fans more (i.e. renovations to the seating bowl, scoreboard, etc.)
probably wouldn't come unless the men's team makes it to the NCAA tourney
(and therefore brings in some additional revenue).
Welsh-Ryan can be a big asset and give the 'Cats a nice homefield advantage
if NU fans can fill it up - although during the Big Ten season it is often
filled with opposing fans, not unlike some of the Big Ten football games.
In any case it is a nice size and has characteristics that make it a tough
place for opponents to come in and play.
One more interesting note is how Murphy commented on the disparity in talent
between NU and the rest of the Big Ten, and how similar schools like Duke
and Stanford managed to overcome their academic restrictions to build a
program. We'll have to see if he is committed to keeping Carmody around
following this season. Note that the women's coach he brought in has really
turned that program around so far this year - they've already reached the
level of wins they routinely have had over the entire season in recent
years.
