[NU Sports] On another note

We hear alot of 'Girardi Talk' on Chicago sports talk radio...
A few things to remember, however:
- As NU people, we should already be proud of Girardi for managing an MLB team, and quite well. Why should we be 'more' proud of him for managing in New York or Chicago ?
- It is my understanding that Girardi has a 3-year contract, without an out clause. That would mean that Florida would have to allow him to talk to others, and would probably want compensation if he signed elsewhere.
- Loria might lack baseball sense, but he doesn't lack money sense - firing Girardi would mean paying off two years of the contract. (and, Girardi was his hand-picked choice to replace Jack McKeon). GM Larry Beinfest and the other Marlins baseball minds talked Loria out of dismissing Girardi over their last tussle, and would probably do so again.
- Monday, listening to the Yankees complete the sweep of Boston, John Sterling called this season Joe Torre's best managing job ever. The only way he probably leaves is by retiring. And would managing in the inflated payroll, expectations and media scrutiny of New York be preferable to South Florida ? My understanding is that Girardi has moved his family to South Florida.
- Dusty Baker isn't so secure in Chicago, but several Tribune writers have mentioned that he should get a contract extension and the team has played a bit better of late. It is also not clear that Joe Girardi would want the Cubs job. In the last 20 years, only one Cub manager has gone on to another managing job - Jim LeFebvre, who managed the 93 Cubs, later went on to manage the 99 Brewers. The Cubs job, also with a high payroll, high expectations (often unrealistic) and intense media scrutiny, might not be that attractive.
So let's be happy that an NU guy is a major league manager - and breathe a sigh of relief that he's not stuck with either of the thankless jobs in New York or Chicago...

Apparantly Marlins owner , Jeff Luria had some terse words for 1st year
manager ,Joe Giradi. If the Yankees do not win the WS this year with a payroll
that is at least 65% higher than the next highest, could Giradi ,a former
Yankee catcher and coach be their next manager in 2007?- The Marlins have one of
the lowest payrolls and will likely lose Dontrelle Willis to free agency next
year -I would still hate the Yankees ,but one would have to love an NU grad
being picked in large part for his intelligence.
