Mike,
I am one of the people who has always been critical of Tom Osborne's decision.
His desire to keep Lawrence Phillips in the program to keep him in a structured
environment might have been well intentioned, but letting him play again that
season (in my book) is inexcusable.
I may not have the whole story straight anymore (it's been over a decade) but I
seem to recall that he physically assaulted a female scholarship athlete
(basketball) who was dating one of his teammmates (Scott Frost).
What lesson were they trying to teach Phillips by letting him back on the team?
I think they missed an opportunity to teach him that such actions have serious
consequences. Didn't he have another year left at U of N? Why couldn't Osborne
have suspended him until the '96 season?
Regards,
Jim
