[NU Sports] QB's

I think that you don't know how players are going to perform in competition
until you see them in competition.

RW should reward those who work hard and perform well in practice by giving
them an opportunity to start. That opportunity gives them more reps, but it
doesn't give them the lock on the job that Baz and Zak earned by performing
on the field. Zak and Baz had to take the job away from the starter and
never gave it back. I think that RW realizes that none of the guys on the
bench has earned that position yet and he wants each of the three guys
competing for that position to know that it is there for the taking if they
execute in competition.

I think this is what you have to do when you don't have a clear successor to
your long-time starter. It may cost us some early games, but the success of
the last three years was the result of Baz getting a chance because the job
wasn't handed to Stauss.

Subject: Re: [NU Sports] dissent

I think that dissenting viewpoints are welcomed here, and in my response to
John I was refuting his points with some of my own. While I do not agree
with him, I can understand his point of view and it is good that we have
some list members that add flavor to the discussion.

Here is an interesting discussion topic: is it wise to go into the season
without naming a starting QB? Walker has made a point not to declare one
until the season progresses and everyone has a chance to see game time. The
last time that this happened was the 2002 season when Stauss started the
first game and watched his career plummet as Basanez took over (although
Webb also had some playing time before his liver was lacerated). Basanez
subsequently took over and performed well as a redshirt freshman (minus a
game missed due to his broken leg). By the time he settled in, though, the
season was basically over as NU was not able to stop anyone and only picked
up a Big Ten win against lowly Indiana at home in a close game.

Maybe if Walker made up his mind before the season it would give the starter
a chance to settle in and gain some momentum. I think this would be
valuable, especially considering past adversity when changing offensive
leadership. Of course there are benefits in allowing competition to help
push the players to perform better, especially with some talented guys
(Brewer) on the bench. Walker has moved guys around in the past, though,
and may show some new plays using the multi-talented guys during the season.
