[NU Sports] We were doing better before

I haven't listened at all, but from the box score (Yahoo has a nice
almost-live box score & play-by-play; there's about a minute or two delay)
it looks like we haven't met a big play that we can't give up. Strictly by
the numbers, ours don't look too bad, but then you look at ASU averaging
over 20 yards/completion and, even taking away Herring's 58-yarder where he
had his fumble, 6-ish yards/carry, and you can see that this is going to be
a long year defensively. It either has to be 2000 all over again, or it's
going to be a long year.
Of course, Michigan's D has shown some weakness, especially against the
run. Michigan State proved this afternoon that they can give up big drives
one right after the other, too. Iowa gave up 21 to Northern Iowa after
their debacle last week, and Purdue's D hasn't been all it was cracked up
to be, at least not so far. And there's always Illinois. So there's
hope. dOSU, PSU, and Wisconsin still scare me, mainly because of their
defense. Although PSU seems to have finally hit their stride offensively,
the Cheese Spread offense came back down to earth today.
It's going to be an interesting season. I think that if the non-conference
season has shown anything it's that the conference race should be a little
more wide open than was originally thought. All of the "Big Three" had
their vulnerable underbellies exposed, and some of the rest showed some
unexpected strengths. To be quite honest, I think that the only two teams
that have no shot at the conference are Indiana and Illinois. This could
be one of those years when 6-2 wins the league. I could probably even
concoct a scenario where four teams tie at 5-3 or something like that.
Well, if nothing else, it should be fun to watch!
