Two Things
1) The Texas-OSU match-up sure reminded me of those Alabama-USC battles in
the late 70's. I remember how much was made of those intersectional games
and I think I recall how one of USC's victories cost Alabama a perfect
season one year. I also was recalling the Oklahoma-OSU games around the
same time and Uwe Von Schamann either winning or losing one with his kicking
leg. Needless to say, I thought that game last night was great and I look
forward to the rematch in Austin. I bet we'll see some more of those games,
as that one last night surely must have been a ratings winner. No one wants
to risk the early season loss but if you're a kid deciding between Texas and
Oklahoma, or OSU and Michigan, last night would surely have swayed you to
want to play in the horseshoe or follow in the footsteps of Vince Young.
2) Along with everyone in here I'm always cheering for an NU bowl
appearance, the more prestigious the better! But I have to admit that I
would prefer one great nonconference game each year even at the risk of it
costing us a bowl appearance. I suppose we can't offer much in the way of a
return "gate" but I would love to see us schedule UCLA, or Florida State, or
Texas anytime. Frankly, I travel to the east coast every Christmas which
makes it tough to get to a bowl game, especially now that I've added a wife
and a baby. A great nonconference game each fall would almost be like a
guaranteed bowl game.
In the last 15 years we've had the following BCS nonconference regular
season opponents:
Arizona State (2 games)
Boston College (2)
Duke (8)
Kansas (2)
Oklahoma (1)
Stanford (2)
Wake Forest (4)
Future BCS games:
Syracuse (4 games)
Vandy (2)
Duke (2)
