All,
I found out a little bit more about how my co-worker and his teammates did/do
their gambling. It was online using a site hosted in the Cayman Islands. They
apparently allow you to bet as little as $5 per game so long as you have at
least $20 in your account. You can add money using a wire tranfer, money order,
or credit card.
The scary/stupid part of this guy's college experience was how easily they
could have been caught by the NCAA (or any law enforcement agency). One guy on
the team would collect the bets and the money. Then, the guy's wife (ie - same
last name, address, and probably a joint checking account) would go online and
place the bets. I asked this guy if it was traceable and he said "absolutely".
So, from what I gather, NCAA athletes are not only ignoring the NCAA's
warnings, but they aren't really taking the NCAA seriously in terms of being
caught. This is probably a looming crisis on many campuses.
Jim
