[NU Sports] gambling and college athletes

Obviously they shouldn't--if it's guys betting among themselves for $5 or $10 on a game unrelated to theirs, i am opposed, but not outraged.

The note said they actually did it on-line--I have been told that on-line book sites require higher minimums than $5-or $10 --so I question whether they are really doing that. If anyone is talking to a live bookie, then I have real concerns, since they became easy prey for information and, of course worse, influence.

The betting scandal at NU certainly gave a black -eye to one of the cleanest programs in the country--and I never want to see even a hint of that on us again

This is just for the sake of discussion on an otherwise slow day.

I have recently worked with a guy who played at a weak Division 1A school. It
is not in the same conference, nor even the same time zone, as NU - so this is
not in any way related to the Cats (I hope).

Anyhow, he said that many players on his team regularly bet on college
football. One of the players essentially acted as the team bookie and placed
the bets online. He did say that they never bet on their own games (and I
believe him) and that the bets were small ($5-$10 a wager).

Maybe this shouldn't surprise me, but it does. Is the NCAA failing this badly
in it's attempts to keep the student-athletes away from gambling? I'd like to
hear what the rest of you think.

Regards,
Jim
