[NU Sports] gambling and college athletes

This is just for the sake of discussion on an otherwise slow day.

I have recently worked with a guy who played at a weak Division 1A school. It
is not in the same conference, nor even the same time zone, as NU - so this is
not in any way related to the Cats (I hope). 

Anyhow, he said that many players on his team regularly bet on college
football. One of the players essentially acted as the team bookie and placed
the bets online. He did say that they never bet on their own games (and I
believe him) and that the bets were small ($5-$10 a wager).

Maybe this shouldn't surprise me, but it does. Is the NCAA failing this badly
in it's attempts to keep the student-athletes away from gambling? I'd like to
hear what the rest of you think.
