Let's all enjoy Jim Bendat's "I told you so."
I believe that was me he was pointing out as one of the primary "doomsayers." Though he is of course much too polite to name names ... :>
That was a great win today. A great win.
Let me again reiterate my significant concerns about this team even as I once again proclaim my fond hope that they run the table. Nothing would make me happier than six more Big Ten wins.
It's clear the Big Ten is up for grabs. I still can't believe Penn State won tonight and I'm far from convinced they are for real. So that leaves the Cats right there with, what, six or seven other teams with one loss? OK, so the Cats are in the hunt. Excellent! Sutton appears to be the kind of program-making player Northwestern has not had in years, if ever. (Poor Brandon Roberson. He is Wally Pipp in purple and pads ...)
My concern, however, to be obvious, is that this Wildcat defense gives up points and yards and big plays in breathtaking gasps and that we can hardly expect the offense to put up 51 in every game. If this team had a tough defense, we'd all be talking Rose Bowl. And I mean this year's Rose Bowl, as in national championship.
But it doesn't. Alas.
To whip out one of the most hoary numbers from the cliche bag, it's now one week at a time.
Also, just a thought: I have never believed that Walker's job was/is on the line. I don't think this game today did anything one way or the other. My take, without any inside information, is that Mark Murphy thinks the team is generally competitive and, critically, the kids are graduating. If those are the two most common-sense criteria, why would he move to get rid of the coach?
Let's all enjoy this win -- kudos again to Jim for his optimism ...
Still your realist -- and would love nothing better than a raft of "I told you so's" at the end of the year -- Alan
PS: My newest idea for toughening up the defense would be to send them to a Transcendental Meditation class. There they could all learn the same meditation chant. It would go like this: "Is-mae-li, Is-mae-li, o yes Is-mae-li ..."
