Though we've debated it before, the consensus for how long to give a new
head coach to show results seems to be five years. Give him time to get
all of his own recruits playing and his own system firmly entrenched,
etc. But how long do you give a coordinator? Depending on how different
the systems are, it could take four or five years.

I remember the first time the idea of a smaller, faster defense really hit
me was watching the 1991 and 1992 Washington teams beat Iowa and then
dominate Michigan in the Rose Bowl. This wasn't just similar guys running
a different scheme. It was obvious that Washington had a different type of
athlete on their defense than Michigan and Iowa had on theirs.

Colby has been on the job for three years, I believe. So I'm willing to
give him at least one more year, and if there's significant improvement
then I'd definitely give him another.
