I think Michael is right. I haven't heard of any offers made to
Charlie Weis, either, or any of the coaches Michael lists. Is that
because no one would want to hire them? No, it's more because everyone
knows they can't hire them.
So too it is with Walker. Except that with respect to Walker, not
every single Division I school would want to hire him. But many
schools would be happy to hire Walker but can't because Walker clearly
isn't interested. For instance, no MAC team would seriously contact
Walker because Walker has no reason to leave for such a program.
To me, the fact that top-tier programs are not drooling over our coach
is a good thing. We've debated this on the list and people have stated
their opinions. But to me, I think we have a hard enough time
developing a consistent program without having to hire a new coach
every few years.
It seems that the overall consensus among the "fire-Walker" crowd is
that we should expect a coach who will lead the team to a top-10 finish
at least once every four years, and a ranked finish in all other years.
Only the absolute best coaches in history have achieved consistent
results like that.
Accordingly, for those of us who are satisfied with consistent, but
realistic, results, it's not troubling that Walker isn't receiving
offers from other top programs. Given that he's already at a pretty
good program (compared to all Division I teams), this isn't something
we're worried about.
