[NU Sports] Would we hire this coach?

Most of us likely agree that right now Bienen and Murphy are considering whether to give RW a contract renewal or extension.

And based on his 7-4 season with spectacular, unexpected wins, plus some super wins in previous years, it’s easy to see why most are in favor of giving him another contract.

But to let such results decide this matter without giving equal weight to RW’s entire seven year record ( 445 losing one), seems improvident and inappropriate.

Here’s why:

A renewal or extension of RW’S contract, logically should be considered on this basis: If RW were applying for this job, based on his NU-seven-year record, would we hire him?

Would we hire a coach who on offense generally has had an outstanding record with a few exceptions?: like his sometimes-poor-clock management, failure to give field goal and kick-off kicking its proper due, and other-during-games gaffes like not pulling Baz after he had suffered a dazing head injury which caused him to throw three-consecutive interceptions that lost the 2002 Air Force game. And some of you probably can cite other offense-mistakes he has made in his seven years. But nonetheless, overall on offense he has provided us with some extraordinarily exciting football.

On the other hand, as many have pointed out, his seven year record on defense has been horrific! Yet, here and now there’s no point in flogging the dead horse. His defensive inadequacies are indisputable!

Anyway, would we hire a coach who is 50% terrific and 50 % horrific!

I say NO!
