Jeff:
You just answered your own question. Basanez should have been touted
for the Heisman Trophy, but to my knowledge never got any kind of a
boost. Barnett did something of a marketing job, but that was more a
function of his personality than anything else in my opinion. For a
University with a graduate business school that is renowned for its
marketing strengths (ranked number one in that category in most business
school surveys) Nu does an atrocious job marketing the football program
or any other athletic program for that matter. IN good bad or
indifferent results, Ryan should be a capacity sell out except for the
early games when school hasn't really started. Admittedly we're
competing with the ND PR bombardment and with Illinois, but those
schools should be offset by the proximity and ease for getting to Ryan.
Look at Wrigley Field, they virtually sell out even when the Cubs stink
which is the case more often than not, ease of access is a major reason.
I don't think that NU's administration recognizes the amount of money
that can be made from selling memorabilia, etc. You have to have some
imagination. We have a neighbor who is a Michigan nut and you should
see the stuff that he has. How about a ball that plays The Victors when
one of his bounces it or a tie that has a button you push and The
Victors plays. My wife went to Penn Stte and they don't have a light
inventory of stuff either. There's gold in them thar hills if somone
will mine it.
