[NU Sports] My wish

Well, they did figure it out, back in September, when they already knew that
they were missing several key parts of the defense.
They started Corey Wootton at DE because he was faster than anyone else, but who
promptly hurt his neck. Colby told us after the scrimmage that Corey was a
"young colt" who played with a lot of fire, but had to be more under control. He
was the missing piece of the pass rush, and would have been awsome but for an
injury, and had Loren Howard returned at 100%
We now know that Tim McGarigle played the last month with injuries that would
have stopped many other kids from playing.
Everyone dumped on Jeff Backes, but we found out quickly how much he added to
the pass defense. The same with Heinz at safety. When they finally settled on
Battle and Henderson's positions, the defense get better, and they obviously
figured out something, witness the defensive play in the 2nd halves of Michigan,
Iowa, and Illinois [even dOSU].
I think you'll find more bend, don't break defense in the bowl, only it will be
better because it is healed. Next year it will be even better as the young
players mature, get time in the weight room and learn the system.
Unless, of course, we make wholesale changes among the coaches. Then in some
cases, we're back to square one.

If you figured it out, why didn't Walker and his defense coordinator figure it
out and make some changes. That's one of the problems with Walker.

Over-all, I'm a little worried about the "crispness"
of our play the
past 3 weeks, but I, like most of us were spoiled by the
Wisky/MSU/Purdue run we
made.
The loss of "crispness" could also be caused by several other defensive
coordinators [Michigan for one] watching us roll out for several weeks and
figuring that if you can tie our unning game up with a 4 or 5 man rush, you can
cover all those spread receivers and maybe force Baz to throw to the 3rd or even
4th choice.
The one thing that stood out at Michigan was that they were able to keep our
running game bottled up with 4 men, sometimes 5. I'm sure the other DC's saw
that, and ran the same kind of stunts up front that Michigan did, along with a
few of their own.
It's a shame we don't have the luxury of watching the actual game films, which
would bear out speculation. TV follows the ball which doesn't always allow the
analysis of what the linemen are doing.
