With the win today Randy Walker moved ahead of Ara Parseghian and Dick
Hanley into second place all-time among Northwestern head coaches in number
of wins. The list is headed by Pappy Waldorf with 49.
Northwestern has had 11 head coaches last 5 years or more, Dick Hanley
posted the best winning percentage (.576) and Dennis Green (.182) the worst.
The list is as follows:
Dick Hanley .576
Glen Thistlethwaite .551
Pappy Waldorf .520
Ara Parseghian .507
Fred Murphy .500
Bob Voigts .459
Randy Walker .451
Gary Barnett .438
Alex Agase .357
John Pont .218
Francis Peay .212
Dennis Green .182
After 11 games this year, Northwestern has posted its second highest per
game scoring average in the history of the school at 31.8 per game. The
defense has allowed 32.5 points per game which, unfortunately, is the 23rd
time since 1950 that the Cats have allowed at least 30 points a game (unless
we come up with a shutout in our bowl game). The first time the Cats gave
up that many points in a season after 1950 was Ara's second year (1957) when
the winless squad (0-9) allowed 30.1 a game. It wouldn't happen again until
1968-69 under Alex Agase.
Starting in 1977, however, it became a regular occurrence for the
defensively challenged Cats of that era as they allowed 30 plus in 15 of the
next 18 seasons until the Barnett squads started shutting the door on
opponents. From 1995-97 the Cats kept opponents under 25 a game with the
great 1995 squad allowing only 15.1 points a game (the lowest for us since
1963).
In Barnett's 7 seasons, the Cats scored 20.6 a game and allowed 26.5. In
Walker's seven, the Cats have scored 25.7 a game and allowed 32.1.
