[NU Sports] Walker's salary

Harry,

Sorry I have to pick on you again, but we ARE paying a lot of money to RW.

The daily lists Walker's salary at $602,887

Lloyd Carr's salary is half that much at UoM, but his total package is
estimated to be between $1M and $1.5M.

Barnett makes $1.6M a year (including slush funds) but his salary is only
$200K. Ron Zook has a similar package.

Tressel is at a similar salary as Carr but his total package may be closer
to $2M.

Ferentz comes the closest in salary at $582,800 with a total package in the
same $1.5 - $2M range.

I don't have numbers on all of the BT coaches, but in terms of salary Walker
seems the highest paid. It is certainly possible that he doesn't make as
much in terms of total package and so the board feels that they have to make
some of that up in salary because he doesn't have some of the big
endorsement and personal appearance opportunities that the much bigger
schools have. But all of the "extra" money for these other coaches isn't
coming out of the athletic department budget either. It is whatever is
considered their fair share of revenue that they are generating for the
school.

So don't claim that RW is here because we can't afford any better.

Jeff

Subject: Re: [NU Sports] OSU game highlighted Randy Walker's shortcomings

Let me clarify a few things--If we were to find a coach who could
consistently win with the tough academic standards that we have, we would
likely have to pay a ton of money for he and his staff to retain them
--(That is, they would be considered top coaching prospects and likely hot
commodities for major programs where they would get waved a lot of money at
them-to move -does this sound familiar ?--read GB) I don't want us to be at
the top of charts for coaches' salaries.

If Basanez is in fact the key reason for two 5-3 years in Conf (hopefully
!), RW should get credit for recruiting him (or under his direction).

Us Techies such as Chuck can argue what is middle of the pack--6.7 out of 11
in my mind is middle of the pack--as it is in the middle third--but to each
their own--

While I am in no position to know, I strongly suspect NU did not pay out $16
MM --I assume we had some insurance which probably picked up a good portion
of it

But back to the underlying question--should NU keep RW or not ?--Well the
answer should be no if you think you can find someone who will do a better
job--hey I like the idea of Fitz down the road--exemplifies all of the
wonderful things NU athletics stand for--but tell me who do you think we
could get right now to improve our performance and be willing to pay his
market value ?--Remember if they are that good, they are probably going to
leave for either more money or more opportunity to win soon after they
become known.

Harry
