Fellow Wildcat Faithful,

I realize that the jury is still out, but all reasonable assumptions point to
Nashville for our bowl game. I assume some of you would prefer to reserve a
hotel this week before the bids go out (especially if our opponent is the
Tennessee Volunteers).

Lee Stevens, please share this with the NUMBalums list if you think it will be
helpful.

Victory & Honor,
Jim

====================================================

In Nashville, you basically have two hotel areas. There is downtown (walkable
to the live country music venues and the stadium for the game)and the
Vanderbilt/West End area. Staying near Vanderbilt puts you about 2 miles from
downtown, but walking distance to many good dining options and "Demonbruen Row"
which has some non-country music nightlife.

It is my understanding that a cab from the airport (BNA) to downtown is
approximately $25+tip. Given that, and the fact that some other sights (like
the Opryland Hotel) are spread out, I'd recommend a rental car, but if you
absolutely don't want one, stay downtown and cabs, buses & feet will do the
trick.

My house is located in East Nashville. Staying by Vanderbilt is about 4.5 miles
away and downtown is about 2.25 miles away. I'll be having a tailgate on
gameday. RSVPs will be required, details to come (assuming the Music City Bowl
bid does :-)

Nashville is a very safe town and you'll be fine walking around downtown
tourist areas at night. You'll probably have a homeless guy or two ask you for
change, but you've seen worse in Chicago.

If you're flying, Southwest is the easiest airline. They have multiple flights
from Midway every day.

DISClAIMER: With the exception of the Marriott Vanderbilt, I've never stayed in
any of these hotels. The ones I noted as preferable aren't full service / full
price and are in convenient locations. If you have more specific questions,
please email me directly.

None are listed in any significant order.

OPRYLAND - THE hotel in Nashville
The Gaylord Hotel (owned by the bowl’s sponsoring company) is a landmark in
Nashville. It would be a GREAT place to stay if you have kids. They have
glass-enclosed atriums with amazing gardens. There are shops and places to eat
within the building, and it is a 5-10 minute walk to the Opry Mills Mall which
has a large number of stores and a multi-plex movie theatre. The only drawback
is that it is a good 8 miles from downtown. Remember, in Nashville 8 miles
means 15 minutes or less (not like Chicago where it would take 1 hour), but it
would be expensive to cab it back and forth so you’d need a car.
