[NU Sports] Ryan Field fans ... (fwd)

One of the drivers of the SMU recruiting scandal was that they never could get
any coverage on TV or in the Dallas newspapers because of the Cowboys.
And if you check the top 10 markets, very few have a lot of college coverage of
local teams, the only exception used to be Chicago where the media had this love
affair with the evil empire, but...
I can remember reading the Daily News for a long time when I was growing up.
They had about 10 pages of sports, which included 2 pages of horse racing
results and previews [Flat track and harness]. You had to figure a page each for
the 3 baseball teams, and a page for baseball in the off season, coverage of the
Giants, the Rangers and the Knicks [remember this is the 50's], a couple of
columns and Gallo's cartoon and there wasn't much room for anything else.
New York City had a lot of colleges playing football, but there was precious
little coverage beyond some spectacular game that had a stringer in attendance.
It was so bad in NY back then that Columbia, an old football powerhouse, did a U
of Chicago and dropped football!
Anyway, when the Rams were in LA, the college coverage suffered there. Georgia
Tech has to be undefeated to get a lot of coverage in Atlanta.
One of the reasons the Sports News digest got started was that coverage of NU
was spread out all over the map and Frank thought it would be good to put it
together so folks could find stories - but that's getting way off target.
Those of you who live in college football towns know about wall to wall coverage
of the local team, but even in Wilmington, DE, down the road from a former
national champ, Delaware gets maybe a half page a day - the Eagles get a full
page, and usually a column.
