I think women's lacrosse is a "no-contact" sport officially. But I
think if you check the rule books, so is basketball. In other words,
there is a lot of contact in this no-contact sport.
We had a bit of a hard time figuring out exactly what was legal and
what wasn't--or should I say what was allowed, and what was called. The
Princeton fans were grumpy about the offciating (they were called for
roughly twice as many fouls), but for the most part the calls seemed
fair.
Here's what I know--whacking someone in the head with your stick is
definitely illegal, and is a quick route to a yellow card. Jamming the
butt end of your stick into the small of another player's back: also
illegal.
But there seems to be lot of gray area when it comes to what would be
called cross-checking in hockey (not to be confused with
crosse-checking in lacrosse). I think the comparison to basketball is
fairly accurate in terms of what is allowed/not-allowed in terms of
contact.
