[NU Sports] Northwestern's Luck, Or Lack Thereof

You are only one of a long line of folks to be fascinated by the game.

In 1763 some clever Native Americans captured Fort Michilimackinac in
Northern Michigan by playing lacrosse. During the game, they hit the ball
inside the stockade's open gates. When the garrison allowed the players to
run in to retrieve the ball, the players grabbed weapons hidden in the
clothing of the women watching the game, overwhelmed the guards and took
over the Fort.

This was part of a very successful military offensive organized by Pontiac
which took over every British outpost in the west except Fort Detroit and
Fort Pitt. The only reason they had to give up the sieges at these last two
outposts is that the French broke their promise to resupply the Indian army
as winter approached. It took the British three years to finally beat
Pontiac who was later murdered by a British-paid assassin named Black Dog.

I made it out to the Lacrosse game yesterday, and had a great time.

I knew approximately nothing about Lacrosse going on, so I had no idea what
to expect. I was very impressed. At least when played on this very high
level (from both teams), it turns out to be a *very* exciting game to watch.

There are elements of b-ball (passing, making fakes to get open or get a
teammate open, the way you play defense), soccer (but without the boredom),
hockey, and broken-field running and speed moves straight out of football.
And NU has some players with serious speed!

Again, I'm lacrosse-ignorant, but NU looks to be a very talented,
enthusiastic, and well-coached team. We were really impressed by #13,
Lindsay Munday, who was the key playmaker. Great moves, change-of-direction
abilities, and great passing skills. It was no surprise to see on the NU
site today that she is in fact the leading scorer in the nation.

Folks, this a very good team, and they are a lot of fun to watch. Was it as
exciting as an OT football win against OSU? No, not quite. But it was damn
good. I'll be back for more Lacrosse games next season.

Tom
