It's always tough to see talented kids end their careers, but I don't think
it is all bad news.  It says volumes that Backes has the choice going to med
school because he took advantage of his academic opportunities as well as
his athletic opportunities.  It also says volumes that Rees, regardless of
his football skills, is held to a standard of academic performance as well.
The message is loud and clear.  School comes first and if you can't balance
football and school, then you should stop playing football.

I second that.  He's listed at 5-9 190, but he certainly looked smaller on
the field.  It's a brutal game with huge fast kids out there.  Not
surprising that his shoulders wore out from hitting or being hit by guys 100
lbs heavier and 6 inches taller.
