I applaud Backes' decision, for any number of reasons.
It's terrific to see our student-athletes achieve at
high levels off the field. And I will always remember
his dazzling punt return to tie the game against
Illinois last year. But his departure makes us even
less deep in an area -- the secondary -- that, to my
mind, has been weak for a decade.

And Rees is not good news, either, again for any
number of reasons. One hopes he can get his grades up.
Many people seem to downplay centers' importance on
lines, but I don't; I think great centers can make a
good line into a fabulous one. I do not find it a
coincidence that the two best NFL teams of the 70's,
the early-70's Dolphins and the mid-late 70's
Steelers, both had Hall of Fame centers.

Not good June football tidings. Anybody got any good
news?
