Excellent editing analysis by Mr. Nolan.
As for the answer to his quick trivia question: Stanford.
As for the answer to his second q: the Stanford alumni magazine?

You miss the point. The reference to Northwestern WAS in the AP wire
story.
But, suppose you're in charge of layout for a newpaper in, say, Atlanta.
You have a fixed amount of space for sports news, most of which needs to be
about Atlanta-based teams. You have a 8 paragraph story on Luke Donald's
win but not 8 paragraphs of space for it.
So, what do you cut? Certainly not that he won and how much, and probably
not his string of near wins and that this one doesn't count as an official
tour win, and probably not the details of his string of birdies at the end.
Now you've got this paragraph talking about where he went to school and
his NCAA championship win. Is that really significant to the story at
hand? Are the readers in Atlanta going to care about what school he went
to if it isn't a 'local' school? Nope. So you cut that graph.
Now, suppose you're a TV sports anchor (other than in the Chicago area)
and you have about 4 minutes to get through all the sports news and scores.
You may be able to give this story 30 seconds. Are you likely to spend 5 or
more seconds on that story mentioning Northwestern? Nope, so the NU
reference doesn't make the cut there, either.
Quick trivia question: Where did Tiger Woods go to college?
Bonus question: When was the last time you saw that mentioned in a story
about his results in some tournament?
