[NU Sports] Why we're not basking in bowl glow

One of the wonderful ironies of bowl games is that they are setup to take
advantage of the alums.

The bowls allocate the less desirable seats to the alums who they know will
come even if they have to sit under the stands. That leaves all of the good
seats for the sponsors to pass out like candy and the general public to buy
through the bowl's website.

The alums and school fans feel pressured to buy these less desirable seats
because they want to make sure that the school has a good showing. Selling
out the school's allotment of tickets translates to "fan support" which
supposedly translates to more favorable future bowl selections. This is
particularly important in the big conferences with multiple bowl
affiliations.

If you think about it a little bit, though, the bowls could easily determine
fan support by polling each ticket purchaser for their school affiliation
when they bought a ticket - but that might mean that the "cheap" seats
wouldn't get sold. So what the bowls (and schools) are doing is a fairly
unsubtle bit of extortion to guarantee that the bowl committees maximize
profits. And you wonder why there are so many bowl games?

So if you want to be a good alum and also have a good seat, you should buy
two sets of tickets. One through the alumni association and one for the
seats that you really want to sit in. Bring a couple of extra Wildcat
sweatshirts and give them and your end-zone tickets to some of the local
kids. Then enjoy the game with a clear conscience that you've done two good
things and have good seats besides.

I think we're not talking bowl because we're all scared defication-less that
we're going to get blown out worse than we did in San Antonio versus that
other NU team that should be UN. Our defense doesn't have a prayer of
stopping UCLA's offense. We'll have to win it 62 - 61, and I don't think we
can score that many points.

Dear Santa: Make me be wrong, and I'll never ask for another thing in my
whole life - 'til next bowl game.
