I'm taking a Pollyanna attitude about the defense - I'm not sure how much of
drop off we suffered with Howard out.
There are many suggestions hinted at that Loren wasn't really playing well, and
hadn't really practiced since the previous season. There was a psychological
benefit to having him in there, but he was apparently being easily handled by
Thiry, not a good sign for Howard.
Anyway, there's a poll I saw and linked that has us 11th in the Big 10 - with
Indy and Ill-noise ranked above us, altho the write up implies that we'll be
just another bottom feeder this year.
Tell it to the Cats.

This puts us 6th in the conference, which surprises me. Of course, these
rankings were probably created before the losses of Howard and Heinz. The
Big Ten is 4th in conference rankings with teams ranging from Penn State
(#2) down to Indiana (#90).
Their offensive rankings (http://msn.foxsports.com/cfb/story/4032284) have
us at #46 which is only good for 8th in the conference. The conference is
rated #1 offensively, with Michigan at #5 and PSU down at #82. I'm not
quite sure how the SEC dropped all the way to #3 in the conference rankings
with four of the top ten teams. So, like any preseason prognostications,
take these with a grain of salt.
