[NU Sports] I have a few questions

1) Marilyn answered the question about NGN. Is it, though, a case of the
athletic department telling NGN not to have their own web site, or just that
the school won't provide one? I know other booster clubs have their own web
sites linked to (but not provided as a part of) the athletic department's
web site. See, e.g., the U of M Goal Line Club web site:
http://www.goallineclub.com.
2) Are you thinking of D&D Dogs, or perhaps the Noyes Street Café?
3) Excellent idea! I think it's never too early to expose kids to college
campuses. Certainly one as beautiful as NU's should be visited early and
often. (Eric and Dennis, be sure to take your kids on a walk around the
lakefill!) We brought our son to his first NU football game/campus visit at
five months, which, admittedly, may have been a little on the young side.
Unfortunately, that was the day that LaSalle Bank or some other thoughtful
Big Company gave away thousands of the "thunder stick" noisemakers that were
in vogue a few years ago. The ear-splitting bangs they make when hit
together, while annoying enough to me on their own, were no fun at all with
a baby. My wife left at half-time to go walk around with our son while I
watched the rest of the game. We came back the next year, and my wife again
left early with our son, who was getting restless. (Fortunately, we have
some good friends with whom we were staying who were in the same boat, so
they weren't alone.) Last year we had to scrap our annual fall pilgrimage
to Evanston due to my wife's pregnancy and the November birth of our
daughter. We're going again this year (to the Wisconsin game on October
8th) with the hope that our son will be able to sit through the whole game,
but we've learned at least one lesson and, accordingly, during the game we
are leaving our daughter--who will at that time be 11 months old--with my
sister who is moving to Chicago next month. I'm very excited to get back
after a two year hiatus!

Eric,
Sounds like your son is kind of like mine. He's 16, hardworking and an honor
student and a pretty fair trumpet player. This summer, he attended a
music camp
at Stanford and heard that NU's brass program was one of the best. (Could
have fooled me since all the music folks I knew during my days in Evanston
were
vocalists.)
Anyway, one thing led to another, and next thing we knew were planning
to attend
homecoming. Close enough to my wife's birthday to say we're celebrating
big time
by: 1) going to the Chicago Symphony on Friday night; 2) taking in the
Saturday
night game under the lights against Michigan. Oh, and my son is going to
tour campus on Friday and take in an information session at the School of
Music. Hope to get him bleeding purple, too.
To say I'm psyched about that weekend is an understatement! Hope this trio
of Montanans brings better luck to the Cats than we did 3 years ago. We
motored down to Colorado Springs for the season opener. Yuck!! But, I have
seen two NU victories in the past 10 years -- at Duke in '96, and against
Oklahoma in '97. So I hope I bring some good karma this time, especially
since I haven't
been to
a game on campus since, I think, '72.
Hope to bump into some of the people on the list while at the game.
I've ordered
tickets and am waiting for them to show up so I can say where we're sitting.
Hurry up, Halloween weekend!
