We've been tiptoeing around the issue lately on the list in regards to
recruiting, but Notre Dame (namely Paul Hornung) have just been trampling
through the tulips on it lately ...
What does it say to these "black athletes" that Horning says ND needs more
of when the school's first African-American coach is fired after only three
years (including a winning record, and a final season that included wins
over Michigan and Tennessee) ... while coaches like Faust and Davie are at
least given a chance to be judged by their own recruits after five years?
Willingham's too classy a coach to bring it up ... but regardless of color,
this is a pretty classless firing, especially for the high and mighty Notre
Dame, after only three years ... they haven't exactly been bringing in
bumper crops of recruits lately to begin with. This is a bigger image hit
than O'Leary's little old fib ever was ... it's gonna be real interesting
to see how this affects this year's class and the next few after that.
I found White's quote in the AP story to be both insulting and saddening --
he says Ty did everything right "between Sunday and Friday" in regards to
graduation rates and such. Well, he didn't do too bad on Saturdays either.
He wasn't exactly inheriting a BCS power after Davie dismantled the
program. He overachieved his first year, underachieved the second and did
OK this year -- not great, but at least he should have had a chance to
prove it with his recruits.
I'm really stunned by this -- I thought there'd be some heat in a year or
so, but such a sudden firing really makes the Doh!mers look bad.
GO CATS!!!
