I was only kidding last week when I thought Ty Willingham might not last a
year and we could hire him if for some reason RW really was seeking
another position ... I never thought he'd be axed after only three years
in South Bend.
I thought we'd seen the height of coaching stupidity last year when
Nebraska fired a coach after 9 wins. I guess no one learned from the first
bowl-less holiday season in Lincoln in eons.
I know that Irish alumni are brutal and they apparently had their hearts
set on O'Leary, but to never even give Ty a chance to work with his
recruits is ridiculous. The guy's a proven coach -- the only possible
reason is that they're real scared Urban Meyer will slip through to
Florida and they want to get him now. But if they don't get Meyer or some
mega-name, then this is a complete and utter failure for the Evil Empire
yet again.
They had a great coach who has proven he can win, even with academic
restrictions. He did a solid job at ND despite their
what-now-should-be-clear dropoff in talent during the Davie years. He won
at Rocky Top this year and was just getting his recruits in place to run
the new offense.
Now it's back to the drawing board for the Doh!mers ... new coach and new
system, recruits backing out (and others turned off by the classless way
this school just treated a class-act coach) ... another three or four
seasons without a BCS bowl and they're gonna be begging Delaney and the
Big Ten for admission. It's a tremendously stupid day for Notre Dame ...
and a BEAU-TEE-FUL day for Big Ten fans and Evil Empire haters everywhere.
See ... we needed to be cheered up after Saturday!:) And yes, Willingham
was at the top of my wish list, but that was IF for some reason Walker
left. This is gonna serve more as another example of getting too greedy
too fast. Nebraska is paying now ... so is Florida, who might be in the
bottom half of the SEC East soon if Spurrier works his magic at South
Carolina. Those two schools and Notre Dame are supposed to be the elites
that can survive anything ... hasty coaching shuffles can really hurt even
established programs these days, and for those trying to BUILD a program,
they can be devastating.
GO CATS!!!
