First off, I'd like to welcome Bob back to the list. 

After the first or second game I sent a message to this list with the subject
"7 games". My main point in that message was that we had a defense that could
win 7 games and an offense that could lose 7 games and that the difference
between those two scenarios would come down to coaching. Now, at 6-6 with no
bowl game to look forward, I think that's exactly what we saw. 

I don't think Randy Walker has set the world on fire with recruiting and I
don't think he's a great game day coach. Heck, by the second half of the Hawaii
game it was obvious that we needed to double or triple team Chad "Terrell"
Owens, and from what I could see the Cats made no adjustments. 

If Randy Walker were to leave, I think NU could find a better recruiter out
there somewhere. But, I don't think Murphy will make any moves this off season.

With respect to recruiting speed, I don't know that it truly boils down to a
racial/academic issue and I don't assume that is what Coach Roy meant. We can
all agree that at the college and NFL levels you see more black athletes in
speed positions than you do white athletes. And you could certainly argue that
GENERALLY white students receive the better side of the public education system
than black students. Still, I think the real problem for NU is that the really,
really fast high school players have the NFL on their radar and Northwestern
doesn't appear to be the best way to get to the NFL.
